Guys what type hounds run? And why you prefer them??? I prefer med speed plus. Love black creeks and blackjack blood. I really enjoy the hard hunt, and rarely loose a rabbit . They work a loss and work it until come up with it.
I used to run faster dogs. They were fun to hunt, but I seemed to use the holed up phrase a lot more than I do now. Also not tons of pressure on rabbit, makes for better shooting.

My hounds are medium speed imo.I like some speed with control especially on twisting/winding c-tails. If they can do the job faster than so be it but i laugh when I read about all these "holed" bunnies. Truth be known most are lost due to over running and losses at checks. I like a level headed dog that can work out a loss and when found takes off on it with authority.I haven't run hare much in a long while but I could see where the speed might be an asset with them.

Brush. With style dogs I run. If they loose one. I will go over and see why. Sometimes holes or garbage piles or sometimes rabbit crosses a gravel or asphalt trail that makes for hard scentimg. But in general I can usually figure it out.
With dogs I used to have it was very difficult to do that. I still have my older patch bred female pebbles. She will die here. But don't hunt her much. Just not compatible with my others . Only place I hunt here in is extremely thick briars As her speed is restricted.

Anthony after reading my post again I realized it might seem as if it were directed towards your hounds. That was not my intent. My apologies if it did. I cant count how many times ive read that statement that they went to ground on the internet. Like you do I often check on a loss to see what happened. Here anyway its seldom a hole. Usually a loss for some of the reasons you mentioned. Are patch hounds fast? Ive never seen one run.

Brush. No need apologize. I didn't take it that way at all.
Yes patch hounds are fast hard hitting hounds. They hunt hard but will cause a lot of checks as they are a run to catch type. Some guys use them to run fox too as they can really push. Used to like the thrill. But since I switched to med speed, it has made for much easier hunting. Even at almost 9 years old , my female can still fly. On a good scenting day, it is fun But on days that you have to walk the line to keep rabbit moving, better off leaving her home.

I keep my dogs because they are reliable. I hunt every weekend regardless of the weather and expect my dogs to produce. I call them medium speed based on the fastest and slowest dogs that I have seen. My top criteria are: HUNT- They can't run it if they don't jump it. NOSE- Big nose to run in tough conditions. GEARS- Related to line control, as fast as possible and as slow as necessary. DESIRE- Never quit and always ready to go.

i too run a medium to a medium plus hound i have cadilac jack male a lil wills smokey male and a chicken female crossed with buckshot all which can walk a rabbit or will push one at a medium plus pace. 95% of the rabbits run are accounted for with these hounds. i also ran a faster hound greenwells reggie crossed with a branko this hound had extreme hunt but only knew one speed fast!!!! thus causing alot of checks by over running i eliminated her from the pack and now the race is a lot smoother. in no way am i singling out any particular bloodline for good or bad reasons,i know there is good and bad in every line i am only speaking from the hounds i own or owned.i am talking about on cottontails in this post reason said i belive if the reggie/branko hound had the opportunity to run hare she would have probably shined.
